How to Prompt Golden Hour Lighting in AI Video and Images
Last updated: October 12, 2026
Golden hour is the hour after sunrise and before sunset, when the sun is low and the light is warm, soft, and directional. It flatters faces, adds long shadows, and makes almost any landscape look cinematic.
AI models often turn "golden hour" into an orange filter. Describing the sun's position and what it does to the scene produces a more natural result.
When to use it
- Landscapes, travel, and real estate.
- Lifestyle and fashion content.
- Emotional or nostalgic scenes.
- Outdoor product shots for drinks, apparel, and cars.
How to write the prompt
1. Say where the sun is. "Low sun behind the subject" gives backlight and rim glow; "low sun from the side" gives long shadows and texture. Choose one.
2. Ask for long shadows. Long, soft shadows are the giveaway of a low sun. Mentioning them makes the light feel real rather than tinted.
3. Use subtle flare. A gentle lens flare or haze sells the warmth. Keep it subtle so it does not wash out the image.
4. Avoid over-orange skin. Ask for natural skin tones with warm highlights, so faces do not turn orange.
Copy-ready example
Subject: A couple walking through a wheat field toward the low sun. Generate the keyframe image first, then use it as the start frame for your video with the motion layer as the video prompt. Add the negative block wherever your tool accepts one.
A couple walking through a wheat field toward the low sun. wide shot, full subject in frame with generous surrounding context, shot on a 50mm prime lens, natural human-eye perspective with clean, undistorted rendering, golden-hour lighting, warm raking sunlight with long soft shadows and amber highlights, 2.39:1 cinematic anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio. Photorealistic, cinematic color grade, high dynamic range, sharp focus.
Camera move: locked third-person tracking shot following behind the subject at a constant offset, matching its pace, smooth cinematic glide, steady professional gimbal cadence. background streams past laterally with steady parallax, subject held stable, gimbal-smooth pursuit. strict frame-to-frame identity lock, subject features, wardrobe and proportions held perfectly consistent. Animate only the camera and environment, not the subject's core features.
Negative: blurry, low quality, distorted, deformed, extra limbs, disfigured, watermark, signature, jpeg artifacts, text errors, bad anatomy, flickering, temporal inconsistency, morphing artifacts, warping, ghosting. Style: cinematic film grain, anamorphic character, high dynamic range, professional color grade.
Common mistakes
- An orange color cast with no actual sunlight direction.
- Short midday shadows that contradict the golden hour look.
- Heavy flare that washes out the subject.
- Unnatural, orange skin tones.
