How to Prompt a Crane Shot (Rising Reveal) in AI Video

Last updated: October 12, 2026

A crane shot lifts the camera vertically, usually tilting down to keep the subject in frame while the world opens up around them. It is the classic opening or closing shot: small figure, huge landscape.

For AI video, the important part is telling the model that the camera rises while the subject stays put, and describing what the rise should reveal.

When to use it

  • Opening shots that establish a location.
  • Endings, where the character is left small against a big world.
  • Reveals of crowds, cities, armies, or landscapes.
  • Real estate and travel shots that rise from a detail to the full view.

How to write the prompt

1. Say rise and tilt together. "The camera rises vertically while tilting down to keep the subject framed" prevents the model from just floating upward and losing the subject.

2. Describe the reveal. Tell the model what appears as the camera rises: the city skyline, the valley, the crowd. The reveal is the point of the shot.

3. Start close, end wide. Begin in a medium or wide framing so there is room to grow. Starting in an extreme close-up makes the rise feel abrupt.

4. Keep the subject still. A crane reads best when the subject is grounded and the camera does the moving.

5. Use soft, directional light. Golden hour or overcast light keeps the wide reveal readable. Harsh midday light often flattens the landscape.

Copy-ready example

Subject: A lone hiker standing on a rock ledge above a misty pine valley. Generate the keyframe image first, then use it as the start frame for your video with the motion layer as the video prompt. Add the negative block wherever your tool accepts one.

Keyframe / image prompt
A lone hiker standing on a rock ledge above a misty pine valley. wide shot, full subject in frame with generous surrounding context, shot on a 35mm anamorphic lens, oval bokeh, horizontal lens flares and gentle barrel character, golden-hour lighting, warm raking sunlight with long soft shadows and amber highlights, 16:9 landscape aspect ratio. Photorealistic, cinematic color grade, high dynamic range, sharp focus.
Motion / camera prompt
Camera move: vertical crane/pedestal rise lifting the camera upward while tilting down to keep the subject framed, smooth cinematic glide, steady professional gimbal cadence. elevating reveal unveiling scale and environment, ground plane receding, sky entering frame. strict frame-to-frame identity lock, subject features, wardrobe and proportions held perfectly consistent. Animate only the camera and environment, not the subject's core features.
Negative prompt & style
Negative: blurry, low quality, distorted, deformed, extra limbs, disfigured, watermark, signature, jpeg artifacts, text errors, bad anatomy, flickering, temporal inconsistency, morphing artifacts, warping, ghosting.
Style: cinematic film grain, anamorphic character, high dynamic range, professional color grade.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting the tilt, so the subject drifts out of the bottom of the frame.
  • Not describing what gets revealed, which leaves an empty sky.
  • Rising too fast; cranes are smooth and deliberate.
  • Adding a second move, like an orbit, in the same short clip.
