How to Write AI Food Photography Prompts
Last updated: October 12, 2026
Food photography is about appetite. The shot has to show texture, freshness, and warmth, whether it is a burger, a latte, or a bowl of ramen. AI models can do this well, but generic prompts produce plastic-looking food.
The key decisions are the camera angle, the light direction, and a few styling details that make the dish feel real.
When to use it
- Restaurant menus and delivery app listings.
- Recipe blogs and cookbooks.
- Food and beverage brand social posts.
How to write the prompt
1. Pick the right angle for the dish. Flat dishes like pizza and bowls look best top-down. Tall food like burgers and drinks look best from the side or at a 45-degree angle.
2. Use side or back light. Light from the side or behind brings out texture, steam, and gloss. Flat front light makes food look dull.
3. Describe freshness cues. Steam, condensation, glistening sauce, and crumbs make food look real and fresh.
4. Style with a few props. A napkin, utensil, or scattered ingredient adds context. Keep it simple so the food stays the hero.
Copy-ready example
Subject: A steaming bowl of ramen with a soft-boiled egg, scallions, and chili oil. Paste the keyframe prompt into your AI image generator and add the negative block if your tool supports one.
A steaming bowl of ramen with a soft-boiled egg, scallions, and chili oil. flat-lay top-down composition, styled arrangement on a clean surface, large softbox key light, soft even illumination with gentle gradient falloff, 50mm standard lens, natural true-to-life perspective, shot on a Canon EOS R5, clean full-frame rendering with natural skin tones, warm editorial grade, golden midtones and soft filmic contrast, 4:5 portrait aspect ratio. Commercial product photography, tack-sharp focus, studio quality, photorealistic, high detail.
Negative: blurry, low quality, distorted, deformed, extra limbs, disfigured, watermark, signature, jpeg artifacts, text errors, bad anatomy, harsh reflections, dust, scratches, color banding, oversaturation, lens distortion, cluttered background. Style: professional studio product photography, crisp specular highlights, clean seamless backdrop, commercial-grade retouching.
Common mistakes
- Plastic-looking food from no texture or freshness details.
- The wrong angle for the dish, like a burger shot from above.
- Flat front lighting.
- Cluttered tables that distract from the food.
