How to Prompt a Flat Lay Product Photo with AI

Last updated: October 12, 2026

A flat lay is shot straight down from above, with the product arranged on a surface alongside a few carefully chosen props. It is the go-to format for food, cosmetics, stationery, and fashion accessories on social media.

AI models often drift to a tilted angle or overcrowd the scene. Being explicit about the top-down view and limiting the props keeps the result clean.

When to use it

  • Instagram and Pinterest posts.
  • Food, coffee, and recipe content.
  • Beauty and skincare product sets.
  • Kits and bundles where several items belong together.

How to write the prompt

1. Say top-down explicitly. Write "flat-lay, shot directly from above". Without it, many models default to a 45-degree angle.

2. Name the surface. Linen, marble, wood, or colored paper sets the mood. The surface is half the styling in a flat lay.

3. Limit the props. Two to four props is plenty. List them, so the model doesn't invent random clutter.

4. Use soft, even light. Softbox or diffused window light avoids harsh shadows that break the clean flat-lay look.

Copy-ready example

Subject: A matcha latte in a ceramic cup with a bamboo whisk and a small bowl of matcha powder on linen. Paste the keyframe prompt into your AI image generator and add the negative block if your tool supports one.

Keyframe / image prompt
A matcha latte in a ceramic cup with a bamboo whisk and a small bowl of matcha powder on linen. flat-lay top-down composition, styled arrangement on a clean surface, large softbox key light, soft even illumination with gentle gradient falloff, 50mm standard lens, natural true-to-life perspective, shot on a Canon EOS R5, clean full-frame rendering with natural skin tones, warm editorial grade, golden midtones and soft filmic contrast, 4:5 portrait aspect ratio. Commercial product photography, tack-sharp focus, studio quality, photorealistic, high detail.
Negative prompt & style
Negative: blurry, low quality, distorted, deformed, extra limbs, disfigured, watermark, signature, jpeg artifacts, text errors, bad anatomy, harsh reflections, dust, scratches, color banding, oversaturation, lens distortion, cluttered background.
Style: professional studio product photography, crisp specular highlights, clean seamless backdrop, commercial-grade retouching.

Common mistakes

  • An angled camera instead of a true top-down view.
  • Too many props, so the hero product gets lost.
  • Harsh directional light casting long shadows.
  • Items cropped awkwardly at the edges of the frame.
