How to Write AI Product Photography Prompts
Last updated: October 12, 2026
Good AI product photos come from the same decisions a studio photographer makes: where the product sits in the frame, how it is lit, which lens is used, and how the colors are graded. A vague prompt like "product photo of a watch" leaves all of those choices to chance.
This guide walks through each decision and how to phrase it, so the result looks like a commercial shot instead of a generic render.
When to use it
- E-commerce listings and marketplace images.
- Website hero images and landing pages.
- Social posts and launch announcements.
- Mockups before a real photo shoot.
How to write the prompt
1. Describe the product precisely. Material, finish, color, and size matter. "Brushed steel watch with a deep green dial" gives the model far more to work with than "a watch".
2. Choose a composition. Centered hero, rule of thirds, flat lay, or macro detail. Each sells a product differently, so pick one on purpose.
3. Name the lighting setup. Photographers use names like softbox, rim light, and high-key for a reason. Models recognize them and produce more consistent light.
4. Specify lens and camera. An 85mm or 100mm macro lens and a medium-format or full-frame body push the image toward commercial photography.
5. Add a negative prompt. Exclude dust, scratches, harsh reflections, and clutter. Product shots live or die on cleanliness.
Copy-ready example
Subject: A brushed steel wristwatch with a deep green dial resting on wet black stone. Paste the keyframe prompt into your AI image generator and add the negative block if your tool supports one.
A brushed steel wristwatch with a deep green dial resting on wet black stone. centered hero composition, product as the singular focal point, dramatic rim / edge lighting separating the subject from a dark background, 100mm macro lens, extreme close focus resolving fine surface detail and texture, shot on a Hasselblad medium-format body, ultra-high resolution and rich tonality, moody cinematic teal-and-orange grade with rich contrast, 4:5 portrait aspect ratio. Commercial product photography, tack-sharp focus, studio quality, photorealistic, high detail.
Negative: blurry, low quality, distorted, deformed, extra limbs, disfigured, watermark, signature, jpeg artifacts, text errors, bad anatomy, harsh reflections, dust, scratches, color banding, oversaturation, lens distortion, cluttered background. Style: professional studio product photography, crisp specular highlights, clean seamless backdrop, commercial-grade retouching.
Common mistakes
- Describing the product vaguely and getting a generic version of it.
- No lighting direction, which produces flat, even, fake-looking light.
- Busy backgrounds that compete with the product.
- Skipping the negative prompt and getting smudges and reflections.
