How to Prompt a Whip Pan Transition in AI Video

Last updated: October 12, 2026

A whip pan swings the camera sideways so fast that the image smears into motion blur. Editors use it to cut between scenes, and directors use it to snap attention from one character to another.

AI video models can produce convincing whip pans, but they need to be told about the blur and the direction. Without that, you tend to get a slow sideways drift that has none of the energy.

When to use it

  • Transitions between two scenes or locations.
  • Comedy timing, snapping from a setup to a reaction.
  • Fast-paced ads, music videos, and social hooks.
  • Revealing something just off-screen.

How to write the prompt

1. Name the direction and the blur. Write "rapid horizontal whip-pan to the right with heavy directional motion blur". The blur is the signature of the move.

2. Keep the clip short. A whip pan lasts a fraction of a second. Generate short clips and use the blurred section as your transition point when editing.

3. Describe start and end frames. Say what the camera starts on and what it lands on. This gives the move a purpose and makes the edit easier.

4. Use kinetic pacing. Pair the move with fast, energetic pacing in the prompt. A slow whip pan is a contradiction that models handle poorly.

Copy-ready example

Subject: A street dancer mid-spin in a crowded night market. Generate the keyframe image first, then use it as the start frame for your video with the motion layer as the video prompt. Add the negative block wherever your tool accepts one.

Keyframe / image prompt
A street dancer mid-spin in a crowded night market. wide shot, full subject in frame with generous surrounding context, shot on a 35mm anamorphic lens, oval bokeh, horizontal lens flares and gentle barrel character, cyberpunk volumetric neon lighting, saturated magenta and cyan glow, atmospheric haze and wet reflective highlights, 9:16 vertical aspect ratio for Reels and Shorts. Photorealistic, cinematic color grade, high dynamic range, sharp focus.
Motion / camera prompt
Camera move: rapid horizontal whip-pan, camera snapping across the scene with heavy directional motion blur, kinetic high-speed motion, energetic and fast-paced velocity. streaking motion-blur transition, energy and momentum, ideal as a dynamic cut or reveal. strict frame-to-frame identity lock, subject features, wardrobe and proportions held perfectly consistent. Animate only the camera and environment, not the subject's core features.
Negative prompt & style
Negative: blurry, low quality, distorted, deformed, extra limbs, disfigured, watermark, signature, jpeg artifacts, text errors, bad anatomy, flickering, temporal inconsistency, morphing artifacts, warping, ghosting.
Style: cinematic film grain, anamorphic character, high dynamic range, professional color grade.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to ask for motion blur, so the pan looks slow and smooth.
  • Long clips where the pan is followed by several seconds of drift.
  • No landing subject, which leaves the move without a payoff.
  • Combining a whip pan with a zoom or orbit in one clip.
