How to Prompt a Tracking (Follow) Shot in AI Video

Last updated: October 12, 2026

A tracking shot moves with the subject, following from behind, beside, or in front at a constant distance. The subject stays stable in frame while the world streams past, which puts the viewer right in the journey.

This is where AI video often struggles: the subject is moving, the camera is moving, and the background is changing all at once. Locking the camera's offset and the subject's identity makes a big difference.

When to use it

  • Characters walking, running, or riding through a scene.
  • Cars, bikes, and other vehicles in motion.
  • Behind-the-subject shots that build suspense before a reveal.
  • Lifestyle and sports ads that follow the product in use.

How to write the prompt

1. Fix the offset. Write "camera follows behind the subject at a constant distance, matching their pace". Constant offset is the defining feature of a good tracking shot.

2. Say which side. Behind, beside, or leading in front all feel different. Pick one and say it clearly.

3. Describe the background motion. Mention that the environment streams past with steady parallax while the subject stays stable. This tells the model what should move and what should not.

4. Lock the subject's identity. Moving subjects are prone to changing clothes, faces, or proportions. Ask for consistent identity frame to frame.

5. Use a simple path. A straight street or path is far easier than a winding route with turns. Save complex paths for multiple short clips.

Copy-ready example

Subject: A courier cycling through a rain-soaked city street at night. Generate the keyframe image first, then use it as the start frame for your video with the motion layer as the video prompt. Add the negative block wherever your tool accepts one.

Keyframe / image prompt
A courier cycling through a rain-soaked city street at night. medium hero shot, subject framed from mid-torso up, heroic and commanding presence, shot on a 35mm anamorphic lens, oval bokeh, horizontal lens flares and gentle barrel character, cyberpunk volumetric neon lighting, saturated magenta and cyan glow, atmospheric haze and wet reflective highlights, 16:9 landscape aspect ratio. Photorealistic, cinematic color grade, high dynamic range, sharp focus.
Motion / camera prompt
Camera move: locked third-person tracking shot following behind the subject at a constant offset, matching its pace, smooth cinematic glide, steady professional gimbal cadence. background streams past laterally with steady parallax, subject held stable, gimbal-smooth pursuit. strict frame-to-frame identity lock, subject features, wardrobe and proportions held perfectly consistent. Animate only the camera and environment, not the subject's core features.
Negative prompt & style
Negative: blurry, low quality, distorted, deformed, extra limbs, disfigured, watermark, signature, jpeg artifacts, text errors, bad anatomy, flickering, temporal inconsistency, morphing artifacts, warping, ghosting.
Style: cinematic film grain, anamorphic character, high dynamic range, professional color grade.

Common mistakes

  • Not fixing the distance, so the subject grows and shrinks in frame.
  • Complex paths with turns and obstacles in a single clip.
  • Crowded scenes where the model loses track of who the subject is.
  • Asking for fast running with fine facial detail visible.
